First Gen. Daughter

Updated: Oct 6, 2021

Being a first-generation daughter, you are an interpreter, a secretary, a second mom, and a therapist. Even though all of these jobs are super important to your family, don't lose yourself, this is still your life, and you need to do what makes you happy. Your mental health is your main priority.

For the last six months, I have been the second mom in our household because my mom had a pretty traumatic accident that left her unable to walk for said months.

I am the oldest daughter, 21 years old; growing up, I've always helped my mom and dad with my younger siblings. But for the last six months, I realized how time-consuming it is to run a household.

It was my time to help my mom as she healed from her surgery, cook and clean for the family, and enrolled in 15 units of the school.

On top of all of the chaos, we are currently going through a worldwide pandemic. I was always busy, but I still made no time for myself. My mental state started to go south, and I began to lash out at my loved ones at home.

Thankfully my boyfriend helped me get out of the house for at least a little, and we enjoyed our time together. Even though it's hard to do things safely because of Covid-19, we had to get creative with what we do each time we hang out with each other.

We love food, and one of our favorite things to do is try new things! Since the pandemic is hurting everyone, especially small businesses, we decided that we try a new mom and pops restaurant to help out our community each Sunday. This little routine gave me something to look forward to at the end of the week (alongside seeing my boyfriend every Sunday)!

At the end of the day, this is your life, and you must discover the little things that make you happy and add them to your routine. You are a big part of your family, but you're the most significant part of your own life. So make it a happy one; let yourself be happy.
